Chagwido Sunset at Jagunae Port: Jeju's Westernmost Viewpoint

The westernmost point on Jeju, so the sun drops into the sea right in front of you. Free parking, a lawn to sit on, clean toilets — and exactly when to arrive.

Jeju has no shortage of sunset spots, but this one has a geographic advantage the others don't: Jagunae Port sits at the island's western tip, so the sun goes down into open water directly ahead of you, behind the jagged silhouette of Chagwido (차귀도), an uninhabited island a couple of kilometres offshore. There is nothing between you and it.

It isn't a manicured attraction. It's a working fishing harbour with a coast guard station, a patch of lawn, a public toilet and a lot of photographers setting up tripods an hour early. That's the appeal — you can bring a chair, sit on the grass and watch it happen without paying for anything.

Getting there, and the parking trap

This is the one thing that trips people up. If you type 자구내포구 (Jagunae Port) into your map app, it drops you at the entrance of the harbour — and you'll park in the wrong place and walk.

Set your navigation to 제주해양경찰서 고산출장소 (Jeju Coast Guard, Gosan branch) instead. Drive all the way in past the jetty until you see the coast guard building; the car park is right in front of it.

It's a big lot and it's free. Even arriving at peak sunset there were spaces left — which is not something you can say about most Jeju viewpoints.

Where to actually sit

Walk in a little further from the car park and you'll find a small lawn with a low stage at one end, and the public toilets on the left. The toilets are clean and properly maintained, which matters more than it sounds when you're planning to sit outside for an hour.

There's a walkway out over the water with a haenyeo (해녀, Jeju's free-diving women) statue on it, facing the sunset. That's the postcard shot. The lawn is the comfortable option; the stage steps work if you'd rather sit higher.

Make it a picnic

The grass is soft and clean enough to lie on. Bring a mat, or camping chairs and a folding table if you have them — plenty of people do.

If you're renting a car on Jeju, this is worth knowing: camping gear rental shops are everywhere on the island, and keeping two folding chairs in the boot changes how you travel here. You stop hunting for cafés with a view and just set up wherever the view is.

There's a convenience store on the way in for snacks and drinks.

Timing it

Arrive 20–30 minutes before sunset. Sunset time on Jeju shifts by more than two hours across the year, so look up the actual time for your date before you go — don't guess.

The best stretch is as the sun drops toward Chagwido and the water between you and the island turns into a single sheet of light. The island's ridgeline is craggy and irregular, and backlit at that moment it reads as a clean black silhouette.

Suwolbong Geotrail, if you have longer

A walking path runs from the harbour along the coast toward Suwolbong (수월봉), a volcanic cliff where the layered ash deposits are exposed in the cliff face — it's a well-known geological site, not just a nice view.

The full route is about 2 km and takes 60–90 minutes. If you're walking all of it, start at Suwolbong and come down to the harbour rather than the other way round. Wear proper shoes. The path is lit, so it stays walkable after dark.

Semi-dried squid at the breakwater

Walk toward the breakwater and you'll pass a row of small shops selling ban-geonjo ojingeo (반건조 오징어) — semi-dried squid, which Chagwido is known for. They grill it for you on the spot. It's chewy, intensely savoury, and eaten by tearing off strips.

Two practical notes: it isn't cheap, and the shops were already closed by sunset when we went. Come earlier, eat the squid, walk the coast, then stay for the sunset. Some of these shops don't take cards — bring cash.
