Hagwi Smile, Aewol: Chewy Rice Twists, Three for ₩2,500
A takeaway shop in Aewol frying glutinous-rice twists to order — three for ₩2,500, four toppings, and opening hours that every review online still gets wrong.
- Per person₩2,500 for three (~$1.80)
- Hours11:00–19:00 · last order 18:00 · closed Mondays
- Getting thereAewol, west Jeju · opposite Hagwi Hanaro Mart · parking out front
Kkwabaegi (꽈배기) is a twisted doughnut, and the version here is made with chapssal (찹쌀) — glutinous rice flour. That changes it completely. Instead of the soft, cakey crumb of a Western doughnut, you get something dense and genuinely chewy, with a thin crisp shell from the fryer. Closer in texture to mochi than to a Krispy Kreme.
They're fried through the day and sold to take away. Three for ₩2,500 — about $1.80. In a country where a single bakery pastry regularly passes ₩3,000, that number is the whole story.

The opening hours everyone gets wrong
Search this place and most reviews say 10:00 opening, closed Tuesdays. That's out of date. It's now:
| Hours | 11:00–19:00 · last order 18:00 |
|---|---|
| Closed | Mondays |
And one more thing the listings don't tell you: they shut early when they sell out. Everything is fried fresh, so by late afternoon only a few varieties are left. Go early if you want a choice.

Picking your topping

Four options, and you can combine them:
| Korean | What it is |
|---|---|
| 설탕 없이 | Plain, no sugar |
| 설탕 | Sugar |
| 시나몬 | Cinnamon sugar |
| 콩고물 | Roasted soybean powder — nutty, dry, faintly sweet. The Korean one. If you only try one, try this. |
Kong-gomul is what coats injeolmi rice cake, and it works the same way here: it cuts the oil and makes the whole thing taste less like a doughnut and more like a snack someone's grandmother made.

Finding it

It's directly opposite Hagwi Hanaro Mart on the main west coast road. The sign is bright yellow and hard to miss. Park in front of the shop.
This is a takeaway-only shop — there's no seating. Buy a bag and eat them at the coast; you're minutes from the water.
